Set Guidance
1:00 - 1:30PM | Opening set | feel-good, high-energy music. This is an advertisement to foot traffic nearby to come over. Feel free to incorporate house music since we won’t have a segment dedicated to that in the lineup. When you finish, you will then get on the mic and introduce our emcees for the festival: Miki Grace & Tommie Collins
2:15 - 2:30PM | Steppers Set | Stepper-friendly music. Some ideas include: blurred lines, get down, ascension don’t ever wonder, Never too much, baby I’m scared of you, y to the yippe (step on), Ga ga ga (James brown steppers cut) I don’t need it (Jamie foxx), super bad (James brown) the Booker shuffle, country girl, can’t get enough (Tamia)
3:20-3:45PM | Gospel To Homecoming Transitional Set | This set will be crucial in tone switching/setting. We will be transitioning from Gospel music and modern dance (Alvin Ailey Tribute) into an HBCU/Homecoming segment with Majorettes, Bands, and D9 Strolling. This set is what gets us from one vibe to the next one. So incorporating music that helps get us there. Perhaps mashing up a gospel classic like Kirk Franklin Stomp or Revolution with a hip hop classic or something of the sort to sonically cue we are heading in a different direction.
4:05 - 4:25PM | Divine 9 strolling & Hip Hop Set | This set will start off with songs intended to get Divine 9 Organizations to stroll. You will work the mic alongside the co-host Miki Grace to encourage greeks to get up and stroll around the park. Songs to incorporate in this segment include: wipe me down, down for my N****, Knuck if you buck, pretty girl rock, faneto, who you wit, and atomic dog. Once each of these songs have had a moment, then you can transition into hip hop in preparation for the upcoming hip hop segment of the program.
4:45 - 5:10PM | Hip Hop Live Performance | In honor of all the elements of Hip Hop Shaundric was hoping you would have a presence during the segment, at least cueing some songs but at best maybe scratching a little bit if you feel comfortable with that.
5:15 - 5:25PM | Footwork Dance Battle | This will begin as a footwork performance and then transition into a battle. Reece, the leader will get on the mic and facilitate the dance battle. We will get the specific songs they will perform to– to you soon but you would cue the songs they want to dance to during this performance. If they don’t name songs for the footwork battle then here are ones to include: pop baby, we outside, let me bang, I’m from chicago, get down lil ma
5:20 - 5:50PM | High Energy Into Line Dancing | This should start off as a high energy set, intended to get people dancing. We are in the peak hours of the festival. Then you will hit the line dances back to back. Here are recommendations (in no particular order): Casper Slide, Juke slide, boots on the ground, turbo slide, wooble, Get Down (DJ Quik), Before I let you Go (Frankie & Beyoncé), Cupid shuffle, electric slide, Tamia slide, DLow Shuffle. You and the emcees would work the mic to encourage the crowd to dance during this segment.
6PM - all done.
The rest of the program is live music.
Overall, we want to strongly encourage incorporating as many Chicago classics, Chicago references and content as possible. Think juke music, house music, hip hop songs that sample chicago legends and references, etc.
